178The 5th Annual Charleston MAC-OFF is scheduled for October 25, 2014 from 2pm to 7pm at the Grove at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. Last year, over 4,000 people gathered to sample traditional and gourmet offerings of Mac & Cheese and award bragging rights to The Best Mac & Cheese in Charleston.

No other food combines love, comfort, and Southern roots like Mac and Cheese. This melt in youth mouth mainstay is a classic that is served as a side dish, a pasta entre, a casserole, fried appetizer or even dessert on many Charleston menus. So we have created an event that gives tribute to our love of this versatile cheesy dish and we are seeking to crown the best of the best.

The MAC-OFF gives Charlestonians the chance to get out and enjoy the crisp weather with great comfort food, music, beer and wine, and other activities. This annual event promotes and supports local restaurants, Southern food culture, the local economy and our nonprofit partner, Lowcountry Local First.

This year enjoy music by Jared Blake from The Voice and Adalya, a cooking demo by Southern Season and a crowd of local businesses and vendors.

Three Prizes Awarded: Best Mac & Cheese Critics Choice, Best Mac & Cheese People’s Choice & Best Local Ingredients Critics Choice.

General Admission $10 (plus online processing fee of $2.95)

Food, drink and Mac & Cheese tasting tickets are $1 (There is an opportunity to buy these online in savings bundles).

Hogs for the Cause, New Orleans’ annual springtime barbecue extravaganza benefiting pediatric brain cancer research, will expand to Charleston this fall with a barbecue celebration Oct. 4 at Patriot’s Point in Mount Pleasant.

PITMASTERS:

RODNEY SCOTT of Scott’s Bar-B-Que

Scott’s Bar-B-Que was founded in 1972 by Ella and Roosevelt “Rosie” Scott in Hemingway, SC. Rosie’s uncle taught him the downhome technique of slow cooking whole hogs over a wood-burning pit. The community just couldn’t get enough of Rosie’s barbecue. After hand crafting his own barbecue pits, Rosie Scott has spent all of his adult life serving some of the best barbecue the Carolinas have to offer.

JIMMY HAGOOD of Food for the Southern SoulUnder Food for the Southern Soul™, Hagood has combined all his talents in producing and distributing his Blackjack Barbecue and Charleston Favorites product lines. From his Shrimp Sauce and Dry Rubs to Stone-ground Grits, Charleston Gold Rice and Artichoke Relish, Hagood is keeping the tradition of soulful southern food alive

JOHN HAIRE of Nick’s BBQ

Jim ‘N Nick’s started cooking pork “low and slow” in 1985 when Nick, along with his dad Jim, reclaimed an old dry cleaners on Clairmont Avenue in Birmingham, AL where they opened the first Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q. Today, with 30 restaurants in 7 states, Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q has become a Southern institution.

CONYERS FAMILY BBQ

Howard Conyers, PhD began manning the family’s burn barrel at an early age. He cooked his first hog with his father’s assistance at age 11 and has spent the rest of his life pursuing his twin passions of rocket science and traditional South Carolina whole hog barbecue. The Conyers family uses a light tomato sauce on their hog. Well, that and as many hours of low and slow smoke as it takes.

AARON SIEGEL of Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ

MARK BEHR of Sweatman’s BBQ

LYNN AND NORTON HUGHES of Shulers Bar-B-Que

BANDS:

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS

Boasting a mix of Southern pride, erudite lyrics, and a muscled three-guitar attack, Drive-By Truckers became one of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s.

HEARTLESS BASTARDS

Anchored by the powerful vocals and incisive songwriting of Erika Wennerstrom, the Heartless Bastards are a roots rock band whose tough, emotionally resonant music incorporates elements of blues, hard rock, garage punk and country as filtered through tales of a hardscrabble life lived in the American Midwest.

THE SOUL REBELS BRASS BAND

The Soul Rebels started with an idea shared between founding members Derrick Moss and Lumar LeBlanc – to play the music they loved on the radio in the New Orleans Brass Band tradition that they grew up on. Together with a group of young, like-minded players from all over New Orleans, they formed the Soul Rebels and set out to make their mark on the music they love.

SOL DRIVEN TRAIN

Sol Driven Train’s music weaves through genres like images in a Tom Robbins paragraph. The versatile 5-piece band, based in Charleston, SC, features rotating lead vocalists, and multi-instrumental talent spread across horns, strings, and percussion. Combining rich varieties of American pop and folk music into their own port-town sound, Sol Driven Train has carved out a unique musical identity within the American roots music scene.

DEAD 27S

Dead 27s began in 2012 when members from various bands decided to play together at a birthday celebration called Face Funk. The band immediately clicked and was asked to play a Jimi Hendrix tribute show. The show was a huge success and word of mouth quickly spread about this group around Charleston, SC. Dead 27s’ sound is described as a Southern blend of rock and soul.

The purpose of Hogs for the Cause is to provide aid and relief of those variable expenses and economic burdens which families face while their child is being treated for pediatric brain cancer. Currently, Hogs For The Cause operates as the premier funding source for pediatric brain cancer outreach services in the United States and has given grants to over 200 families in need in just 6 years and partnered with several hospitals nationally, including MUSC Children’s Hospital.

Tickets start at $30 and are on sale here. For more information please visit hogsforthecause.org.

Awendaw Green And Patriots Point Present Homegrown Music Showcase

Posted in Sales & Events with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 11, 2011 by Lowcountry Boil

Awendaw Green always puts on great Barn Jams, shows and festivals. The great thing about the upcoming Homegrown Music Showcase this Sunday is that you don’t have to drive far as it’s in Mount Pleasant at Patriot’s Point. Attendees will see a very diverse group of artists at a singer in the round set up where three artists rotate every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Joining in the Patriots Point Veterans Day week celebration, this event is presented by Awendaw Green and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.

“This year we moved the annual Awendaw Green Music Fest to Patriots Point by invitation from Mac Burdett, the executive director of Patriots Point. After Mac volunteered at one of our early fests and liked the vibe, he wanted us to connect some of our good people to his great cause through music,” said festival organizer and Awendaw Green founder Eddie Green. “It will be friend raiser and a fundraiser for their Institute of History and Science and the brand new 501c-3 Awendaw Green Arts Institute.”

As there are 14 wooded acres at Patriots Point, the event will take place in a spot right next to the harbor by the U.S.S. Yorktown so it is similar to being in the woods in Awendaw. Green basically wanted to make the day like their Barn Jams where it is very connective, fun and good for all. In addition to the talented musicians, there will be food trucks, local arts and crafts and lots of other activities throughout the day. Green continues by saying, “We have much hope that this event will spread our music outreach to many new ears, showcase many well known and other deserving artists while helping Patriots Point.”

Funds raised cover the critical areas that insurance companies do not by providing assistance to those with every day needs such as wigs, prosthetics, childcare, gas cards, utility bill assistance, medication assistance and more. Share Our Suzy’s mission is to raise money and resources to assist and support breast cancer patients in South Carolina from diagnosis to remission.
