The Tarlatans Announce EP Release Show at Charleston Music Hall

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on July 18, 2014 by Lowcountry Boil

Charleston based Rock-Roots band The Tarlatans will be celebrating the release of their highly anticipated EP “Good Luck” at The Charleston Music Hall with a show including Charleston favorite Steven Fiore and Volcanoes in The Kitchen on Saturday August 16th at 8 PM.

NEW TARLATAN PROMO PICBeginning in February 2014, The Tarlatans recorded with acclaimed musician, composer, producer, Jay Clifford (Jump, Little Children) for a six-song EP.  The recording features four new songs as well as updated versions of older songs including the regional radio hit, “Been Dreaming.”  Clifford’s influence on The Tarlatans is similar to how most musicians feel about him, as they cite him and Jump Little Children as major influences. Says drummer Blake Shorter, ‘”Now that the process of recording the EP is over and we can actually sit back and listen to the final results, we’re so thrilled that we were able to have Jay Clifford as our producer. After working with Jay I think we all agree that the man is a musical genius, and some of the things musically that he guided us and inspired us to do worked out really well.” Lead guitar player and songwriter Ryan Williams continues, “We had a blast making the EP, working with Jay, and recording at Hello Telescope and Charleston Sound.  This record is quite a step up from our self-made album a while back. We couldn’t be more proud of the EP or more excited to have a great sounding product.”  In turn, Clifford was excited to be working with the band: “The Tarlatans have a sincerity in their songwriting that puts them in the same class as The Avett Brothers and The Lumineers.”

Along with G. Love, the record has been blessed by the likes of Josh Kaler (Slow Runner / Butch Walker), and string work from local heavyweights, Micah Gangwer, Peter Kiral, and Norbert Lewandowski.

Over the past two years The Tarlatans have played every type of venue, bar, and club in the Southeast and always look forward to being in their adopted hometown of Charleston for shows.  Playing The Charleston Pour House with The Wild Feather, The Music Farm with Jars of Clay, and headlining The Windjammer have all been bucket list items for the band, and they are crossing another item off the list by performing their new tunes at The Charleston Music Hall.

Tickets for The Tarlatans EP Release show are available online at charlestonmusichall.com, at the Charleston Music Hall Box office, 37 John Street (Tues. – Fri. 10am – 6pm843-853-2252), at Monster Music and Movies or Cats Music or at the Etix Hotline: 1-800-514-3849. 1920266_10152050975589565_1081741604_nThe Dirty Dozen & the Last Waltz Ensemble team up for a special night at the Charleston Pourhouse on Friday, April 18th. Doors open at 8pm with LAST WALTZ kicking it off at 8:45pm, DDBB horns will join the Last Waltz Ensemble followed by a full DDBB show.

To describe how the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has arrived at its 35th Anniversary, trumpet player Gregory Davis employs a tried-and true New Orleans-centric analogy: “It ends up being like a pot of gumbo – you drop in a little okra, drop in a little shrimp, you drop in some crabs. Before you know it, you’ve mixed in all these different ingredients and you’ve got a beautiful soup. That was our approach to music early on and it still is today.”

Started in Atlanta, The Last Waltz Ensemble is a musical group that progressively plays the music of Bob Dylan and The Band.  The group is an amalgam of the best players in the nation presenting the legendary and timeless music of the super-group, THE BAND, whose influence is still felt in music nearly 30 years after its last performance.

Tickets: $17 advance ticket, $20 day of show

The lineup includes musicians that come close to emulating what Todd does as a singer/songwriter,” said festival organizer Brett Ford.  “As we plan to make this an annual event, my goal is to continue to have Americana type groups play and get recognized for what they do, since the majority of them don’t receive the radio play or media recognition that they deserve.”

A portion of proceeds will benefit Carolina Studios, a non-profit that provides at risk students a safe environment to foster creative, educational and career-focused initiatives through music technology and media arts.

Skinful Halloween

993429_10151996702142780_1635479264_nI initially wrote about Skinful Halloween awhile back but as the location kept changing, I decided to rewrite the feature with the final details. My vet and friend, Dr. Brian King, has put on this party for 13 years and it is by far one of the best parties in Charleston. This year the event and organizers need the support of the fans as costs to put on this party has escalated after permitting issues in Hollywood, then an Edisto Plantation got pulled, followed by issues from the city and Music Farm backing out. If you have ever hosted an event, then you know what is involved in overhead for renting a venue, permits, vendors, musical talent, tents, security, medical, set ups and so much more. So here are the details….

Skinful Halloween 2013 hosted by Flavor Flav will be held on October 26th 2013 at Brick House Kitchen from 2pm-2am. Music will be provided by Ozomatli, Dirt Nasty, Blowfly, The Dubplates and more plus DJs, circus acts, burlesque and dance, art, video mapping, a silent disco, massive laser light show and the sickest lighting and sound set-up in the Southeast. They will be limiting the amount of guests and keeping the party contained inside the fenced in area. Coolers are welcome. The party will start at 2pm and will abide by the 11pm noise ordinance. To keep the buzz going, guest can enjoy a silent disco from 11pm till 2am. (I did this after Widespread Panic in Mexico a few years back and it is a nice alternative to keep the party going.)

Music Line Up:
3:00pm-5pm: The Dubplates with Zumjay
5:15pm-6:30pm: Cee Know The Doodlebug from The Digable Planets and The CFO Band
6:45pm till 7:45pm: Blowfly
8pm till 9:45pm: Ozomatli
10pm till 11pm: Dirt Nasty

Silent Disco Schedule:
11pm till 12am on Channel A: Jake B vs KlipArt or Channel B: FullHass
12am till 1am  on Channel A: DJ Fred Krugrrr or Channel B: Circe and Rage United
1am till 2am on Channel A: MJ12 or Channel B: DJ Magnetik

There will be some on-site parking plus shuttles, cabs and limos companies running special rates. Even though this a normal weekend concert at Brick House Kitchen, there will be Sheriffs and Private Security. There will also be EMTs on site in case of emergencies.

While this is a rockin’ night, it also benefits the Tanzania Education Foundation and Keepers of the Wild.

An Evening with Steep Canyon Rangers and Shannon Whitworth

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 13, 2013 by Lowcountry Boil

Charleston Music Hall and Awendaw Green are proud to announce the foot stomping, get-out-of-your seat and let loose, evening with Steep Canyon and Shannon Whitworth on Thursday, August 22nd from 8pm until 11pm at the Charleston Music Hall. Doors open at 7pm and advanced tickets are on sale now for $20 – $25 at Etix.com or charge by phone at 1-800-514-3849 or the Charleston Music Hall Box Office at 37 John St.

Asheville, NC, Steep Canyon Rangers are an acoustic Bluegrass quintet. Before embarking on a world tour backing comedian/banjoist Steve Martin, the Rangers were nominated for two International Bluegrass Music awards. The Rangers were also named ‘Emerging Artist of the Year’ at the IBMA awards and they won a grammy for best bluegrass album.

Shannon Whitworth is ready for adventure, and wants to take listeners on a cross-country trek that will leave all preconceptions of banjo-wielding songstresses behind. Starting off as a singer/songwriter for The Bisquit Burners, Whitworth has forged ahead as a swoon-inducing solo artists that has been compared to Emmylou Harris’ Americana days.

For more information on the show, please visit the Charleston Music Hall or Awendaw Green.
