Ayoka Lucas Makes A Bold Fashion Statement

BY MEGAN WALDREP

Independence is the new black.  Especially for former Creative Director of Charleston Magazine and “fairy godmother” of Charleston Fashion Week®, Ayoka Lucas.  After 10 years of working with Charleston’s biggest magazine, Ayoka has launched a business of her own that includes fashion styling, consulting, trend tracking, and emcee-ing.  With Charleston Magazine being her leading client, she’s also called upon by the likes of Essence Magazine, MTV News, ESPN, and ABC/CBS affiliates. And to think, it all started with a letter to the editor of Charleston Magazine to start her own fashion column.  To say she is a go-getter is an understatement.

“Everyone wants to step outside the box at some point in their career!” said Lucas. “This new venture will allow me to work with a variety of people in a number of different ways. I’ve found that over the years people have reached out to me for assistance in many fashion related areas and I am now able to accommodate many of those requests. I’m truly excited about the possibilities of starting new relationships and lending my gifts and vision to new projects!“

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Ayoka as a designer for Charleston Fashion Week’s ® first Emerging Designer Competition in 2008.  Since it’s beginning, it has been amazing to see the event grow from 6 local designers to over 20 artists from across the nation.  Grossing over 2.4 million dollars in the 5 day event, CFW has put Charleston on the fashion radar.  National and International attention has been brought to our beautiful city, and for one week of the year, people around the globe look to Charleston for it’s budding talents.  What makes Ayoka stand out is her constant support and love she gives to designers and artists of our city.  Her passion to promote,  encourage, and guide young talent is a gift to all who have been honored with the chance to showcase their work.  What started out as a dream and idea that she pitched and developed years ago has become a reality for the chosen designers to see their looks walk down the runway.

“For close to ten years now, Charleston Magazine has allowed me to document and cultivate the fashion and design community through their editorial pages, fashion spreads, street style features, blogs and of course the greatest accomplishment of my career, turning a simple vision I had into one of the nation’s leading fashion events with the production of Charleston Fashion Week ®.” Said Lucas.  “The ability to take on new projects is an incredible feeling for a creatively driven thinker like me. Growth is essential and I have so much more to give!”

And now it’s time for Ayoka to begin and conquer another chapter of her life.  As you can tell, she is a woman who gets things done while making her dreams and the dreams of others a reality.  I have no doubt that she will continue to be a great success into whatever she puts her energy.  Visit www.ayokalucas.com to keep your eye on what exciting and stylish adventures she will take on next and to inquire her fashion mind to help your style reach the next level.  Guaranteed to impress.

Entropy Arts & American College of Building Arts are proud to present JAIL BREAK 2 on Saturday, November 12th from noon-11pm at the Old City Jail at 21 Magazine St in downtown Charleston. An all encompassing arts festival established to provide an outlet for local artists to present their work, JAIL BREAK 2 will be held at one of the most unique venues in downtown Charleston where the jail will be converted into a gallery, displaying works by local visual artists and students from the ACBA as well as music and dance instillations from Dancefx Charleston and Annex Dance Company. Additionally, interactive festivities such as live painting, arts and crafts, demonstrations of various building arts by ACBA students and artisan booths will be outside in the main yard of the former jail.

“I started Entropy Arts to focus on presenting innovative performing arts events that showcase collaboration between artists of different mediums including music, dance, visual art, writing, filmmaking and more,” stated festival organizer Andrew Walker. “It was a natural step to host an arts festival where diverse artists and audiences could come together to celebrate the arts.

Stacy Smallwood

Written by Alexis Comer:

Located on the bustling retail mecca of King Street, Hampden Clothing is just what your inner fashionista is thirsting for in Charleston. I attended a Charleston Fashion Week kick-off event at Hampden recently and checked out the designs of A.L.C., Helmut Lang, Rag and Bone, and Charleston’s own Marysia Swim while sipping a cocktail with live house music in the background. The store had been set up specifically for this 4-trunk event showcasing cutting edge designers by devoting separate areas of the store to each designer who in turn had their own style and aesthetic.

The store looked amazing and the atmosphere was a preview to the of excitement of Charleston Fashion Week, just six days away. Ayoka Lucas, Style Editor for Charleston Magazine, was on the scene as were a bevy of fashionable ladies, taking in the unique clothes, shoes, and jewelry. The event’s success and flawless execution are a testament to Hampden’s exceptional influence in the Charleston fashion world.

With the vision to create a boutique that offered trendy pieces, emerging designers, and wardrobe staples, founder Stacy Smallwood established Hampden Clothing as the Southeast’s newest destination for personal style. A native of South Carolina, Smallwood has had an interest in the creative arts since her childhood. Following college at Vanderbilt University, Smallwood leapt into the rigorous and well-respected buyers training program at Neiman Marcus in Dallas, Texas. There, she was mentored by some of the best buyers in the business and carefully honed her retailing and customer service skills. Smallwood rose through the ranks as an assistant buyer for designer sportswear and department manager of Ladies Shoes.

Hampden Clothing stocks designer and contemporary clothing from the most emerging, hard to find designers such as Opening Ceremony and Dagmar to the hottest designers of the moment like Alexander Wang, Yigal Azrouel, and more. Hampden Clothing has been regulary mentioned in Elle, Lucky, InStyle, Vogue, and was featured as one of the Top 50 Stores in the Country by Marie Claire Magazine. With two locations and an online website, Hampden Clothing offers customers a unique experience including all of your favorite designers along with impeccable customer service.
