The Bands of Wando Foundation is a South Carolina nonprofit corporation organized for charitable and educational purposes, and is established to promote music education to students. In order to participate in regional competitions, the Wando band needs financial support as the Charleston County School District only provides $25 for each high school band member. These funds do not begin to cover the financial need for Wando students to compete at this level. Additional funding is also required to attract top musical directors, pay additional staff, offer lessons purchase instruments, and other necessary equipment. Last year, the Wando band was a Bands of America national finalist as well as Bands of America South Carolina regional grand champion, regional finalist & class champion.

The Bands of Wando Foundation will be holding the inaugural Fundraising Gala on Friday, May 4th from 7-11pm at Omar Shine at Patriot’s Point in Mt. Pleasant. The event will feature live entertainment provided by The Robert Lewis Jazz Quintet with additional guest artists, a live auction, catering provided by Charleston Bay Gourmet, and a cash bar. With 200 guests expected in attendance, the goal at this black tie optional event is to raise $35,000 to cover costs of various needs for the Wando High School Band as well as the middle school bands from Cario, Laing, and Moultrie Middle Schools that feed into and support the Bands of Wando program.

Lowcountry Autism Foundation to host Stokes Volkswagen 4th Annual Oysters for Autism

The Lowcountry Autism Foundation is set to shuck things up over some hot steamy oysters for a cause at their fourth annual Oysters for Autism event at Bowens Island Restaurant on Sunday, November 12th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets may be purchased online prior to the day of the event at www.lafinc.org.

The menu for the event includes oysters, chili and hot dogs and also includes non-alcoholic beverages. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Local artist Jack Triebold and local alternative rock band Bateman’s Stud Farm will provide entertainment. The event will also feature a silent auction with items ranging from generous gift certificates to businesses in the area to golf outings. Sponsors include title sponsor Stokes Volkswagen as well as Motley Rice, Lucey Mortgage, Cresswind Charleston and more. 

The Lowcountry Autism Foundation’s strives to improve the lives of families living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They provide clinical diagnostic assessments and programs to support families throughout the lifespan. LAF’s goal is to decrease the stress on the family and connect them with every available resource.  With a mostly volunteer, multidisciplinary staff LAF has provided over half a million dollars in free autism services while all funds raised stay in South Carolina.

12th Annual Music and Oysters for Wildlife

awesFriends of Coastal South Carolina announces the 12th annual Music and Oysters for Wildlife on Saturday, January 21 from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm at the Sewee Outpost in Awendaw. It will be a fantastic day of music and all you can eat Bulls Bay oysters. The Rusty Rudder crew will be cooking the BBQ and chili this year. The music lineup includes Minimum Wage, Hans Wentzel & The Eighty Sixers with guests Mark Bryan, Danielle Howle, and Doug Jones, The Loose Hinges, Ed Hunnicutt and the Red Dog Ramblers

Presented by Friends of Coastal South Carolina, the event benefits the group’s environmental education programs which allow thousands of kids along the South Carolina coast to explore the wonders of our natural world each year. In addition to teaching kids about their responsibility as stewards of our environment, the science focused programs allow kids to see their in-class science lessons come to life in the outdoor classrooms of our national forest and wildlife refuges.

“Although we support many conservation projects for our coastal national forest and wildlife refuges, environmental education remains our flagship program,” said Executive Director Grace Gasper. “We must have a knowledgeable and engaged next generation making decisions to continue to protect our natural resources.”

The event also features an “out of this world” silent auction with incredible bargains on travel, local dining, and outdoor gear. Advanced tickets $35  or $40 at the gate. Children under 12 are free. Ticket includes live music and all you can eat oysters. All beer wine and food sales benefit Friends of Coastal South Carolina. 8th Annual Chase After a Cure Gala

caac2016charlestonmagazinepage001-1Chase After a Cure will host its eighth annual gala, raising money for childhood cancer research at Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital, on Saturday, Feb. 6. With a theme of “Chasing Cures in a Garden of Possibilities,” the 2016 gala is set for 7 p.m. at the new Charleston Gaillard Center.

The gala, which raises money to fund local research and purchase equipment for treatments and cures for childhood cancer, welcomes Charleston vocalist Quiana Parler as the featured entertainment. Dinner will be provided by Tristan Events and there will be live and silent auctions, raffles and surprise entertainment. Tickets are $125 per person. Purchase tickets at chaseafteracure.com.

Chase After a Cure is dedicated to funding research and raising awareness for alternative and more effective treatments for children with cancer. Our main focus is on hard to treat cancers such as neuroblastoma. This event is Chase After a Cure’s largest annual fundraiser, typically raising $150,000 to fight childhood cancer. Since its founding, Chase After a Cure has raised almost $1 million for research and equipment at MUSC.

Giving Back Program for the Charleston Community

The first recipient in September will be My Sister’s House that provides services, programs and resources to empower domestic violence victims and their children to live free from abuse. 5th Annual Gimme Shelter

Operation Home has rescheduled the 5th Annual Gimme Shelter event on Thursday, July 30, 2015 from 7:0010:00 p.m at The Alley downtown. 131 Columbus Street. The always fun party will feature a silent auction and the opportunity to win a 2015 Scout 177 Sport Yamaha 70 and Trailer Boat, valued at $30,000. In addition to bowling and arcade games, New Orleans’ based New Breed Brass Band will also be entertaining the crowd with their funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop repertoire.
