About the Film: Inspired by his own family’s complex relationship with “soul food” — fried chicken, ribs, macaroni and cheese, peach cobbler, and the whole panoply of down-home foods made with grease, sugar, and love — acclaimed filmmaker Byron Hurt asks whether this diet is nurturing or destroying the African American community. With humor and heart, Hurt questions the effects of “soul food” on the health of not only African Americans, but all who guiltily consume this most comforting of American comfort foods.

CCT food2 fmCharleston Culinary Tours’ Chef’s Showcase at the Farmer’s Market is a two and a half hour tour that highlights Charleston’s award-winning farmer’s market as it allows guests to meet some of the local farmers and pick out a variety of ingredients for brunch. Then as a local chef incorporates the chosen components into a true farm-to-table meal for participants to enjoy back at the chef’s restaurant, the tour guide leads guests on an approximately 45 minute historic walking tour. Held rain or shine, each Charleston Culinary Tour visits several different restaurants, bars or the Farmer’s Market to combine elements of a historical tour with a culinary adventure! There are five tours available including Historic Downtown, Upper King Street, The Farmer’s Market, Chefs’ Kitchen and Mixology. Chosen by various restaurant and bar partners, the menu features an array of eclectic dishes and concoctions that provide insight into Charleston’s cuisine and cocktail scene.
