Today, most oyster roasts are truly oyster “steams” as the more traditional cooking method is often set aside and replaced by the steamer pots that many find to be more convenient. With Bulls Bay Oyster Roasts, you can enjoy the age old method of roasting that has been used for generations without any of the hard work.

“I started Bulls Bay Oyster Roasts to preserve the Lowcountry tradition of wood-fired oyster roasts.  We cook our oysters over a wood fire on a hot steel plate, covered with water-soaked burlap,” said Oliver Thames of Bulls Bay Oyster Roasts. ”Nothing can compare to the taste of a Bulls Bay oyster cooked over an oak fire or the comraderie of the crowd enjoying the smell of the smoke and sizzling oysters while waiting anxiously for the next batch!”

Bulls Bay Oyster Roasts is dedicated to sharing their passion for preserving the traditions that surround the Charleston area’s waterways. Drawing from a family heritage in the Lowcountry that dates back for over 300 years, they believe that the most delicious oysters in the world come from the local waters of Bulls Bay. Their crew will take care of everything, from cooking to cleanup as they provide everything from custom built wood-fired cookers, to tables, knives, and shell collection. Additionally, they work with local oyster suppliers to get the freshest Bulls Bay Oysters. They are committed to delivering the authentic Lowcountry oyster roast experience!

The oyster roast concept was so fascinating to Travel Channel host George Motz that he filmed a short documentary called The Mud and The Blood that will be featured in Charleston’s upcoming film festival. Featuring the guys from Bulls Bay Oyster Roasts, Motz shows all aspects of the roasts from start to finish along with the socializing that goes along with them. If you are anxious to try Bulls Bay Oyster Roasts’ product, they will be throwing a oyster roast as the film premieres at the Charleston Film Festival.

Charleston Girl Perfume: The Perfect Gift This Valentine’s Day

Just in time for Valentine’s Day is the recent launch of Charleston Girl Perfume. Charleston Girl eau de parfum is a sultry, enticing fragrance that opens with a burst of sparkling-fruity top-notes, weaves a delicate and sensuous floral middle and finishes with a soft, amber and sandalwood dry-down. While including ingredients native to Charleston, this luminous fragrance captures the spirit of a true southern belle. With its chic red & white packaging and beautiful scent, Charleston Girl is the perfect pick for her this Valentine’s Day.

Kelly Gaskins, Photo courtesy: Ken Malcolm Photography

Former journalist and Charleston native Kelly Gaskins always had aspirations to branch out and start her own business.  Gaskins played a major role in designing the fragrance. She teamed with perfume manufacturer Alpha Aromatics to make the vision of her scent a reality. “I wanted to create a scent that would appeal to the refined tastes of every Charleston girl and bring out the fun, fearless southern belle in every woman,” said Gaskins. ”It was fascinating to learn that you can layer so many different scents to create a beautiful end result.” The young entrepreneur even designed the bottle packaging. The simple and elegant bottle design is inspired by the graceful and natural beauty that distinguishes Charleston girls. Adorning the neck of the bottle is a stylish red bow that serves as a subtle and sexy accessory. The moniker written in beautiful cursive on the bottle adds a touch of sophistication and charm.

The perfume is inspired by the unique and unforgettable southern women of Charleston. “If you ask anyone that visits our city about the women here, they will tell you that Charleston girls are naturally smart, sexy and sophisticated,” said Gaskins. “Charleston girls possess an elegance and charisma that never seems to age.  We exude a confidence and charisma that lights up any room.”
The 1.7oz bottle retails for $39.99 at www.CharlestonGirlPerfume.com and in select boutiques.

Mac’n At The ‘Drome – A Concert Film Experience Benefiting Mac Leaphart

Posted in Sales & Events with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 13, 2012 by Lowcountry Boil

On January 28, both local and national musicians will be sitting in for beloved singer and songwriter, Mac Leaphart, and performing his songs at The Hippodrome. Benefiting a man who has successfully made a career out of connecting with people through his music, proceeds will go to Mac in his ongoing recovery from a serious car accident and recent surgery to remove a brain tumor. A unique experience of camaraderie and good will, performances of Mac’s music will be set against a visual narration on the theatre’s IMAX screen and give life to Mac’s story and his significant impact on those around him.

The concert features collaborative performances by Mark Bryan (Hootie and The Blowfish), Danielle Howle, Five Way Friday, John Wesley Satterfield, Joal Rush, Doug Jones (Craven Melon), Luke Cunningham, Greg Payne (The Piedmont Boys), Ryan Bonner, Jamie Resch with Shovels & Rope, Donnie Blackwell and more very special surprise guests. Reid Stone and Guilt Ridden Troubadour featuring members of Mac Leaphart’s current band, Mac Leaphart and My Ragged Company, will act as house band and musical conductors for the night’s celebration.

As doors open at 6:30 pm, acoustic music by Jim Marshall (Junkyard Angel) and a silent auction will start in the lobbies. Food concessions provided by Home Team BBQ and a full bar will run throughout the night. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the theatre and will last until 10 pm followed by more live music by Five Way Friday and John Totaro’s Classic Woodies until 12 a.m. or later. Garage parking is available as well as free parking in the open lot adjacent to the venue. Advance tickets are $17 and may be purchased online at  www.charlestonhippodrome.com. Day of show tickets are $20.

Mac Leaphart is a singer/songwriter who plays a blend of country, rhythm and blues. The Charleston City Paper describes Mac as “a rowdy set, which seems to meld Gram Parsons with the ‘Sticky Fingers’ era Rolling Stones”. Since his arrival in Charleston in 2007, Leaphart has been performing over 250 shows a year, solo and with his band, Mac Leaphart and My Ragged Company. Give Mac a listen and see why Skope Magazine says, “This guy may just single handedly save country music.”

Awendaw Green And Patriots Point Present Homegrown Music Showcase

Posted in Sales & Events with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 11, 2011 by Lowcountry Boil

Awendaw Green always puts on great Barn Jams, shows and festivals. The great thing about the upcoming Homegrown Music Showcase this Sunday is that you don’t have to drive far as it’s in Mount Pleasant at Patriot’s Point. Attendees will see a very diverse group of artists at a singer in the round set up where three artists rotate every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Joining in the Patriots Point Veterans Day week celebration, this event is presented by Awendaw Green and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.

“This year we moved the annual Awendaw Green Music Fest to Patriots Point by invitation from Mac Burdett, the executive director of Patriots Point. After Mac volunteered at one of our early fests and liked the vibe, he wanted us to connect some of our good people to his great cause through music,” said festival organizer and Awendaw Green founder Eddie Green. “It will be friend raiser and a fundraiser for their Institute of History and Science and the brand new 501c-3 Awendaw Green Arts Institute.”

As there are 14 wooded acres at Patriots Point, the event will take place in a spot right next to the harbor by the U.S.S. Yorktown so it is similar to being in the woods in Awendaw. Green basically wanted to make the day like their Barn Jams where it is very connective, fun and good for all. In addition to the talented musicians, there will be food trucks, local arts and crafts and lots of other activities throughout the day. Green continues by saying, “We have much hope that this event will spread our music outreach to many new ears, showcase many well known and other deserving artists while helping Patriots Point.”

Up and coming local designer Megan Waldrep will be showing her MEW collection on Friday at Charlotte NC Fashion Week. A lover of vintage clothing and classic Rock ‘n Roll T-shirts, Megan launched her first t-shirt collection, Mew Design, during her Junior year at the University of South Carolina. As her personal style developed, so have the designs. With an established business and reputation for a more rock ‘n roll style, Megan presents Mew, her foray into developing full collections that express her new found maturity and outlook on fashion. With the new Mew collection, she has achieved a more refined aesthetic of edgy meets sophisticated.

MEW Designer Megan Waldrep Photo courtesy Bob Mule of Bobtography

For the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, Megan wanted to celebrate her love for Charleston, SC and the rich culture that thrives in the city where she lives. With 150 years since the Civil War, Mew’s influence represents Charleston’s history by bringing looks of the past into modern day life. What you will see is a perfect interpretation of people, places, and events of that time mixed with signature Mew style. The Spring/Summer 2012 collection showcases hints of Civil War style and Rock ‘n Roll as you’ve never seen before.

Megan was chosen as a finalist for Charleston Fashion Week 2008 and a semi-finalist for Project Runway. Let’s see what happens in Charlotte this weekend!

For more information about Megan and her designs, check out MEW online. To purchase tickets or get showing schedules for Charlotte NC Fashion Week, visit www.charlottencfashionweek.com.
